Overview
Temple University offers a free, optional personal safety app called Temple Guardian. Students, faculty and staff can use the the app to:
- request a virtual "guardian" to remotely monitor your walk to a destination. The guardian can be a friend or family member, or the Temple police.
- chat with Temple police to report a crime or incident (the chat can be anonymous if you wish)
- call Temple police or 911 at the click of a button with your location information
You can download the app the iOS App Store or Google Play store.
Note that this service is available only on Temple's U.S. campuses.
Getting Started: Set Up the App
Before setting up the Temple Guardian app, verify that your phone number is registered with Temple:
- Log in to TUportal.
- Click Manage My Account on the upper-right portion of the screen.
- Click Manage Addresses and Phones.
- Make sure your phone number is listed with a type of Mobile - Personal or Mobile - Work. If not, click Add Phone and follow the prompts to add it. Then please allow 24 hours for it to sync with the app.

Download and install the Rave Guardian app from the App Store or Google Play store.

Open the app by tapping the Guardian icon.

At the Welcome to Guardian screen, type your mobile phone number. Then make sure U.S. is selected under My Organization and tap Continue.

You will receive a text message with a verification code. Enter this code on the next screen. Then click the checkbox to accept the terms and conditions agreement and tap Continue.

If prompted “Is this you?” with Temple University listed, tap Yes. Then go to step 8. Otherwise, tap No, this is not me and proceed to the next step.

Enter your Accessnet-username@temple.edu email address (for example, tua00000@temple.edu) and tap Continue.

A verification code will be sent to your email address. Enter the code and tap Continue.

Temple recommends that you receive instant updates, so you can get important reminders from the app and can more easily communicate with the police in an emergency. Tap Yes or No thanks to receive these updates.

If you tapped Yes on the previous screen, tap Allow so Guardian can send you notifications.

To receive location-based alerts, tap Enable Now.

At the Welcome To Guardian screen, tap OK, got it to proceed.

The main screen appears. If you see a yellow bar indicating Location is Restricted, tap Location is Restricted and proceed to the next step. Otherwise, skip to step 17.

Tap Enable Now.

In your iPhone settings, tap Location.

Then tap Always. Then press the Home button and return to the Guardian app.

Perform the following steps:
a) Click the + symbol next to Emergency contacts. Then tap Add to add a primary and alternate emergency contact person.
b) If you have vehicle, tap the + symbol next to Vehicles. Then tap Add to add details about your vehicle. This additional information could be helpful to the police in locating you.
c) Temple recommends keeping 911 profile sharing set to on.

Tap the back button to return to the main screen.

As a final steap, acccess your phone's contacts and add anyone you may use as guardian/monitor when using the Virtual Safe Walk feature of the Temple Guardian app. By doing this now, you will be ready to use this feature.

You will be prompted to adjust your settings. For the app to work properly, location privacy should be set to Allow all the time. Tap Sounds good.

In your Android settings, tap Permissions.

Initiate a Virtual Safe Walk
The people you select as your guardian(s) will:
- be able to monitor your walk
- receive a notification if your timer expires
- receive a notification when your walk ends

From the Guardian home screen, tap Virtual Safe Walk.

Select Friends & Family or Official Guardian (TU Police). If you Select Friends & Family, proceed to the next step. Otherwise, skip to step 7.

Make sure Friends & Family is selected. Then type the + symbol in the box below to select who monitor your trip.

Tap Allow Contacts. Then tap OK at the next screen to confirm your selection.

Select one or more people from your contacts. Then tap Done.

Once you select one or more contacts, their initials will appear in the Friends & Family box.
Add any notes about your trip that you want the other people to see, such as your starting point and destination. Then select the amount of time and tap Start Timer.

At the confirmation screen, tap Start Timer again.

Near the end of your trip, you will receive an alert that your timer will expire soon and promping you to add time, deactivate or request help:

To make changes or request help, go back to the Guardian app. Then tap the timer icon on the lower right.

You can then add or subtract time from your trip, call the Temple police, deactivate your current session, or cancel without making any changes.
If you tap Deactivate, you will be prompted to confirm your selection and your guardians will be notified.

When the timer has expired, you will receive the following text message:

To deactivate the session or call the police, tap the Virtual Safe Walk icon. You will notice that since the trip ended no minutes are listed.

Tap the Deactivate or Call the TU Police button.

If you selected Deactivate, tap OK on the next screen to deactivate the timer.

If your timer has expired, the people you selected to monitor your trip will receive the following text alert:

When you deacitate your timer, the people you selected to monitor your trip will receive a text alert that you have ended your trip.
Chat with TU Police

On the Temple Guardian main screen, tap Chat with Police.

To report the tip anonymously, tap the slider next to Go Anonymous. The screen will go dark:

Select any of the options listed. If you did not select Anonymous, the following screen appears, where you can compose and send a text message. The Share my location option is turned on by default.

Call TU Police or 911
* It is best to call the Temple (TU) Police only if you are within the Main Campus patrol area or HSC Campus.
FAQs
Who can use the Temple Guardian app?
The app can be used all Temple students, faculty and staff. The app requires a current @temple email address.
How will my guardians know that I safely arrived at my destination?
By deactivating your timer, your virtual escorts or "guardians" will receive a text message that you ended your timer session.
What happens if I let my timer expire?
If your timer expires, your friends and family or Temple police (whoever you designated as a guardian) will be notified that they should check on you.
Will I receive a reminder before my timer expires?
If you enabled push notifications when setting up the app, you will receive a reminder that your timer session will expire soon. You can then add time or deactive the timer.
Will Temple police be notified each time I set up a Virtual Safe Walk?
No. The police will only be notified if you select the Official Guardian option and allow your timer to expire rather than deactivate it when you arrive at your destination.
Can the Temple police monitor my whereabouts whenever they want?
No. The app places you in control. The Temple police can only access your location if you select them as a guardian and you allow your timer to expire. You also can decide whether to allow the police to access your location when initiating a call or chat.
Should I call the Temple police or 911 in an emergency.
It is best to call the Temple (TU) Police only if you are within the Main Campus patrol area or HSC Campus. You can call 911 from any location.
