Change to Google's Licensing Model Impacts Temple

Google has announced a change in its business model that will end unlimited file storage for universities effective July 2022. (Temple has been granted an extension until December 2022.)

As a result of this change, the amount of storage space available to Temple will decrease by roughly 90%. Information Technology Services (ITS) has been working with our campus partners to develop plans to optimize our remaining storage in response to this reduction. Our overall strategy is to pool the new Google storage limit and share it in a manner that is in line with Temple's primary mission to prioritize teaching, learning and collaboration.

To reach our goals, ITS will:

  • Eliminate storage on Google Photos – September 15, 2022 (previously July 31, 2022)
  • Remove the ability to create new Google Shared Drives (updated September 1, 2022)
  • Retain access to Google Drive specifically for those who are current students, faculty (including Emeriti), staff and first-year alumni – Ongoing Summer and Fall 2022 (previously July 31, 2022)
  • Set a 3GB per user quota on Google Drive – Ongoing Summer and Fall 2022
  • Migrate files of eligible users from Google Drive to Microsoft OneDrive – Ongoing Summer and Fall 2022
